Lake Maggiore day trip itinerary from Somma Lombardo
Starting from our headquarters in Somma Lombardo, in just a few kilometers you can immerse yourself in the spectacular landscapes of Lake Maggiore, including castles, hermitages overlooking the water, historic villages, botanical gardens, and boat cruises.
Itinerary 1 – Lombardy shores: history, relaxation, and views
Angera – Borromean Fortress and Lakeside (30 minutes from Somma)
Visit the Rocca di Angera, with its doll museum and panoramic terrace. Walk along the lakeside and visit to the historic center. Optional lake cruise (public or private).
Laveno-Mombello (30 min from Santa Caterina) Lunch with a lake view.
Salita in funivia panoramica al Sasso del Ferro per una vista a 360° su tutto il Lago Maggiore. Possibilità di traghetto per l’altra sponda o passeggiate nei boschi.
Ranco (5 minutes from Angera)
Panoramic stop along the lake. Visit to the Ogliari Transport Museum (free, reservation required).
Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso (30 minutes from Ranco)
Overlooking the rocky shore of the lake, it is one of the most evocative places. Reachable by panoramic elevator or stairs.
Itinerary 2 – Borromean Islands and Verbania (Piedmont shore)
Stresa – Departure for the Borromean Islands (ferry from Laveno or by car, about 1 hour from Somma)
Boarding for: Isola Bella: Visit the Borromeo Palace and its spectacular gardens. Isola Madre: Botanical park with exotic plants and free-roaming peacocks. Isola dei Pescatori: Lunch in a traditional lakeside restaurant.
Pallanza – Lakefront and historic center
An elegant neighborhood in Verbania. Ideal for a romantic stroll along the lakeside and a coffee overlooking the lake.
Arona – Statue of San Carlo Borromeo and shopping
Visit the gigantic statue of San Carlone (35 meters tall), which you can also climb inside. A lively historic center with shops, bars, and spectacular views of the lake. An excellent destination for dinner before returning home.
